Questions to Ask a Pet Relocation Company

When choosing a relocation company for your pet, asking questions such as

  • What size of containers do they use?
  • How long they will keep your pet at each layover point? Many companies offer customised packages depending on the size of your pet and its needs.
  • Are there any additional costs, such as for any mishaps along the way?
  • Doe the cost include insurance?
  • Are there additional charges for cleaning the container each time the pet soiled it? – surely that should be expected and covered, right?

What Can Influence Pet Flight Price?

The price of moving your pet can vary depending on the season you choose to fly and the size of your pet container. Therefore, it is always best to book in advance as this will help you save money on flights. Some companies also offer discounts if you book multiple pets together or if you travel during off-peak times.

Some airlines have restrictions on which breeds of dogs can fly on their aircraft. For example, short-nosed dogs, like pugs and bulldogs, are often not allowed to fly due to the risk of them developing breathing difficulties while travelling. This can restrict the timing and cost of the flights because there are fewer airlines to choose from.

Importing Your Pet into Australia in 2023

If you are importing a cat or dog into Australia, you must apply for an import permit from the Department of Agriculture at least six weeks before arrival. A good pet relocation company can do this for you.

You must also provide proof that tests have been done showing that the animal has been vaccinated against rabies within six months before travel unless it comes from a rabies-free country.

The animal will then need to undergo quarantine upon arrival in Australia, which usually lasts ten days but may last up to 30 days, depending on where they were travelling from.

Note also that several dog breeds are prohibited in Australia. These include

  • American Pit Bull Terrier
  • Dogo Argentino
  • Fila Brasileiro
  • Japanese Tosa
  • Perro de Presa Canario
  • Wolf hybrids

The importation of many breeds is banned or restricted, so be sure to check this early on.

Does Having A Pet Cause Problems Finding A Rental?

Having a pet can sometimes make it difficult when looking for a rental home, as landlords have the choice of a few applicants for their home, so they coil choose another application. However, some states, such as New South Wales and Victoria, have laws prohibiting landlords from discriminating against tenants who own pets – that means your application won’t be declined to the pet.. There are also local council laws around pets, such as cat curfews and the number of pets you may have on a property, so make sure you check out this before signing any lease agreement or seek guidance from your relocation consultant when shortlisting suburbs.

You can find local laws on the local council website, which you should refer to soon after your arrival because all pets must be registered with the council.

There is often a willingness, on your behalf, to compromise for a pet-friendly rental perhaps offer a pet bond or similar, talk to us about strategies.

Unfortunately, Australia is currently experiencing a severe shortage of available rental homes.  Having a pet means you could limit your options or have to make some compromises.  With apet you are restricted to searching for a home with a garden or fully enclosed or you may have to look further out into the suburbs, where commutes tend to be longer, to get more space while staying within your budget constraints. Knowing this in advance is a helpful foresight.

Tips On Settling A Pet After A Long-Haul Flight

After travelling long distances by air, pets often experience stress and discomfort. Hence, owners must take steps to settle them into their new homes quickly and easily after arriving in Australia. Here’s how:

  • Make sure there are plenty of familiar items, such as food bowls, toys, and bedding; consider asking friends or family members back home if they can send these items over so that your furry family member feels more at home straight away!
  • Give your pet time to adjust. After a long-haul flight, your pet may be disoriented and stressed. Give them time to adjust to their new surroundings before introducing them to new people or pets.
  • Maintain their routine. Try to maintain your pet’s normal routine as much as possible, including feeding and walking times. This will help them feel more comfortable in their new environment.
  • Provide a comfortable space. Set up a cozy space for your pet to rest and feel safe. This can be a crate, a bed, or a designated area in your home.
  • Keep them calm. Avoid exposing your pet to loud noises or too much excitement. This can increase their stress levels and make it harder for them to adjust to their new environment.
  • Take them out for walks. Taking your pet out for walks in familiar areas can help them get accustomed to their new surroundings.
  • Take your pet to the vet: After a long flight, it’s essential to take your pet to the vet for a check-up. This will ensure that they are healthy and have not contracted any diseases during their travels.
  • Provide lots of love and affection: Your pet may be feeling anxious and stressed, so providing them with lots of love, and affection will help them feel more at ease.
  • Be patient. Your pet may take some time to settle into their new home fully.
